Gardening for Good

For our service project, my group went to downtown Dousman in order to weed and take care of several untended flower beds lining the bike trail in the main part of town. Our goal was to beautify the small sitting and resting area used by many bikers and other pedestrians who travel the Glacial Drumlin recreational trail. Downtown Dousman is a beautiful and historic place is the Lake Country Area. Unfortunately, it was lacking an equally beautiful public garden. Dozens of people drive and bike past the Glacial  Drumlin Trail every day, and it was apparent that the unkempt garden was not cutting it. We wanted to clean up the garden space, and with the help of a parent who was an experienced gardener, we were able to. After several hours of weeding and trimming of the dead flowers present in many of the flower beds, we had successfully cleaned up four large flower bed
areas lining the bike trail, creating a clean, beautiful space for any passersby who may want to stop and dine at the picnic tables. We learned how a small good deed can impact an entire town. Although the garden might not seem like an important facet of Dousman, improved flower beds perk up the surrounding area. This might seem like common knowledge, but we also learned to be on the lookout for ant hills. Sitting on an ant hill can be very painful. Even with this painful lesson, there were many appreciative bikers and businesses who could admire the newly beautified area.
